How this is made
A printing term, and the right one: this is where the things that have to exist somewhere go.
What it counts, and what you can say no to
Every visit is counted by Vercel Web Analytics, which sets no cookie and stores nothing on your device. That count exists so I know whether anyone reads this.
Google Analytics adds which pages people read and where they came from, and it does set cookies. It is never used for advertising, and Google signals are off. If your device is set to a European time zone, including the UK and Switzerland, it does not load at all unless you say yes. Everywhere else it loads by default. Either way, your choice is remembered on your device, not in a cookie, and you can change it here.
Separately, the server keeps a log of every request, from people and crawlers alike: the page, the time, the address it came from and the rough place that address points to (country and city), the browser and device type, and the page that linked here. It sets no cookie and does not depend on the question above. It is how I tell readers from crawlers, and it is kept with the logs of my other sites. The address, and the full link you came from, are deleted after 30 days; the rest is deleted after 18 months.
Following, and what happens to your address
The newsletter runs on Substack, and Substack keeps the list. The field on this site only carries your address to Substack’s own sign-up page; nothing is stored here. If you would rather hand over nothing, the RSS feed carries every issue.
How it is built
Static pages generated by a Node script with no dependencies. One typeface, Archivo, served from this site. No fonts or scripts fetched from anyone else, apart from Google Analytics as described above. The highlights are copied here from where they were published, pictures included, so opening this page never makes your browser talk to a social network.
